TOKYO — Financial infrastructure giant Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, an artificial intelligence model gateway and routing platform designed to help businesses optimize token usage across dozens of model providers.
The agreement, announced on August 19, brings a service that dynamically routes tasks across more than 400 AI models from over 80 providers directly into Stripe's expanding ecosystem. OpenRouter evaluates every incoming prompt in real time, steering queries to the most suitable model based on task complexity, pricing, latency, and reliability. Its client roster already includes major technology firms such as NVIDIA, Zoom, and Lovable.
Navigating a Multi-Model Landscape
Stripe has increasingly focused on serving the economic needs of the artificial intelligence sector, providing billing and payment rails to the majority of high-growth companies building in the space. Last year, the platform rolled out tools like Token Billing to help organizations monitor and manage compute expenses. Managing token expenditure has grown increasingly difficult as foundational model creators frequently release new architectures and adjust API pricing tiers.
By folding OpenRouter into its stack, Stripe aims to give developers a neutral control plane to balance performance and expenses without being locked into a single provider.
"Stripe has spent more than a decade building neutral infrastructure that companies trust, and OpenRouter was founded on that same philosophy," said Alex Atallah, co-founder and chief executive officer of OpenRouter. "There is no single AI model that is best for every task, and we believe the future will remain multi-model. Developers need a neutral layer to coordinate and manage across multiple AI models. Joining Stripe will accelerate this mission and bring the AI ecosystem to every business."
Tokens as Core Currency
Patrick Collison, co-founder and chief executive officer of Stripe, emphasized the fundamental economic role compute units play in modern software development.
"Tokens are effectively the reserve currency for companies building businesses with AI, and how effectively limited compute resources are utilized will clearly dictate real-world economic potential," Collison said. "Stripe is building the financial infrastructure for AI, and together with OpenRouter, we will help businesses route requests properly and use tokens efficiently to maximize profitability."
