Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (HKCAD) has rolled out new regulations for passengers carrying lithium battery power banks on flights, aiming to boost aviation safety. Announced today after a March 21 meeting with local airlines, the rules follow recent safety incidents tied to these devices.

Starting April 7, 2025, passengers on local airlines cannot use lithium battery power banks to charge devices or recharge the power banks during flights. Stowing them in overhead compartments will also be banned. These updates align with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and address growing safety concerns.

Travelers should check with airlines for details on the new HKCAD regulations before flying.

“Aviation safety is our priority,” a HKCAD spokesperson said. “These lithium battery power bank restrictions are critical for passenger and crew protection.”
