Apple is reportedly planning a significant change to its operating system naming convention, according to sources familiar with the matter. The tech giant is expected to bypass iOS 19 entirely and instead release iOS 26 in 2025, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.
The move appears to be part of a broader strategy to standardise version numbers across Apple's ecosystem. Under the new scheme, all Apple operating systems would adopt the last two digits of the upcoming year – similar to how car manufacturers name their models.
Industry analysts suggest this change will create a more cohesive brand identity across Apple's product range. Currently, the company's operating systems use different version numbers, with iOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2 creating potential confusion for consumers.
The Cupertino-based company has not responded to requests for comment. The official announcement is expected at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference scheduled for June 9, 2025, where the company will likely unveil iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.
This naming shift is expected to coincide with a significant user interface redesign, though the iPhone 17 lineup will reportedly retain its current naming convention when launched in September 2025.
