As the chief editor of The Once Times, I recently embarked on a journey to Tokyo to experience Comiket 104, the summer edition of Japan's largest doujinshi fair. Accompanied by Brian Y., chief editor of TOT's Japanese section, we set out to compare this event with its winter counterpart, Comiket 103, focusing on the evolution of crowd control strategies.

Pre-Event Reconnaissance

Upon arriving in Ariake late at night and checking into the Sotetsu Grand Fresa Tokyo Ariake, we conducted a preliminary site inspection the day before Comiket 104 began. Our attention was immediately drawn to newly planted trees along the straight section leading to the bridge entrance of Tokyo Big Sight. This addition raised initial concerns about potential impacts on crowd flow, as the space now seemed to accommodate only two "blocks" of attendees instead of the previous three seen at Comiket 103.

Queueing Experience

As the sun rose on Day 1, we headed to join the queue after breakfast. Compared to Comiket 103, we noticed two immediate differences: a shorter detour to reach the line's end, and a slightly more advantageous starting position. The summer heat at C104 posed significant challenges, making the queueing experience more physically demanding than the winter event C103.

The Comiket Queue Mechanism

The true brilliance of Comiket's crowd management became evident as we progressed through the queue. The system operates on the principle of infrequent but significant movements, typically occurring only 2-3 times throughout the waiting period. Each movement covers a considerable distance, after which the queue remains stationary for an extended period.

This approach offers several advantages:

  1. Ample Break Time: During stationary periods, attendees can leave the queue to use restrooms, purchase drinks, or rest under nearby trees without fear of losing their place.

  2. Clear Communication: Staff provide explicit instructions about queue movement times and guaranteed stationary periods, allowing attendees to plan their breaks effectively. Throughout the queueing process, Comiket staff kept us well-informed using loudspeakers, greeting and briefing us on how long we would stay in our current position. This allowed attendees to step out of the queue confidently during these intervals.

  3. Support Infrastructure: The surrounding area is well-equipped with toilets, vending machines, and convenience stores to cater to the needs of the massive crowd.

The Impact of New Trees

As we approached the final stretch, with Tokyo Big Sight in view, the purpose of the newly planted trees became clear. While not providing complete coverage, these trees offered valuable shade to nearby attendees. Our position fortunately placed us near one of these trees, providing relief from the direct sunlight.

Even those not directly under the trees could temporarily leave the queue during stationary periods to seek shelter if the heat became unbearable. This addition demonstrated a thoughtful approach to enhancing attendee comfort without compromising the efficiency of the entry process. It's worth noting that this improvement likely stems from the city government's efforts, as Tokyo Big Sight serves as a venue for numerous events beyond Comiket.

Comparing C103 and C104

Despite initial concerns, the new landscaping did not noticeably impact the efficiency of admitting attendees to the venue. Instead, it provided a welcome improvement to the queueing experience, particularly during periods of intense sunlight.

The primary difference between the winter (C103) and summer (C104) events lies in the challenges posed by weather. The summer heat at C104 made the queueing experience more physically demanding, highlighting the importance of the queue management system that allows for frequent breaks and the newly added shade from trees.

Conclusion

Comiket's evolving crowd-control strategies continue to set a global standard for large-scale event management. The subtle improvements observed between C103 and C104 demonstrate the organizers' commitment to refining the attendee experience while maintaining the event's legendary efficiency.

For otaku and doujinshi enthusiasts planning to attend future Comiket events, understanding these queueing mechanisms can significantly enhance your experience. The unique system allows for better planning of breaks, refreshments, and rest periods, making the wait more comfortable and manageable, regardless of the season.

As Comiket continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to observe future innovations in crowd management and attendee comfort. The addition of shade trees is just one example of how small changes can make a significant impact on the overall event experience.

It is crucial to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the Comiket staff. Their hard work and dedication in controlling the crowd are critical to the event's success. Their efficient management and clear communication contribute significantly to the smooth operation of this massive gathering. Equally commendable are the participants themselves, who patiently and orderly follow the staff's instructions, maintaining the queue's integrity throughout the waiting process. This cooperation between organizers and attendees is a testament to the spirit of Comiket and plays a vital role in making it the well-organized, world-renowned event it is today.

THANK YOU TO ALL COMIKET PARTICIPANTS!!!
