Hong Kong, 5, November 2024 - The Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has announced that its highly anticipated three-runway system (3RS) will become fully operational on November 28, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the airport's expansion project.

The completion of the 3RS project, which began in 2016, will substantially increase HKIA's handling capacity. The new system includes a 3,800-meter third runway and related supporting facilities, enabling the airport to handle up to 120 aircraft movements per hour, compared to the current 68 movements.

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) officials stated that the expansion will strengthen Hong Kong's position as an international aviation hub and support the city's long-term economic growth.

"The three-runway system will significantly enhance Hong Kong's aviation capacity and reinforce our city's status as a leading international aviation hub," said an AAHK spokesperson.
